thanksGIVING party.

a few months ago, my friend jenny had a brilliant idea
centered around doing something good for our city,
specifically a population that is oftentimes overlooked: the homeless.

we {sarah, jenny, and myself} decided to meet with our friend aneta {who just happens to work for the denver rescue mission} to talk about what we, a few 20/30 something bloggers, could do to raise awareness and just do something good for the city we love so much.
enter the thanksGIVING party.
Web
a night focused on giving back and having a great time while doing it.

the timing of the event falls perfectly during the denver rescue mission's holiday fundraising campaign.
they will be hosting a turkey drive to make sure every family has the opportunity to have a thanksgiving turkey this season, and for those who will eat at the mission for thanksgiving this year,  a donation of just $1.92 pays for a complete meal.

we will be collecting both non-perishable food items and turkeys to be donated that evening to the mission to help in their efforts.

not only that, but we will have treats and giveaways and i can always bust out some karaoke if the moment is right.
bottom line: you don't want to miss this event.

so save the date and RSVP asap to Sarah at sarahann.noel@gmail.com and spread the word while you're at it!
this event is for bloggers, people who read blogs, and people who like to do good.
the more we can collect and donate, the more people the denver rescue mission can serve!

let's do something good denver!

a photo shoot in five points.

it's amazing what beauty you can find when you're in search of it.

that is why i love photography.
it forces me to look, to be aware, to really see.

today i am thankful for an afternoon with a good friend and our cameras, exploring our city, and finding the beauty in it.

never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God's handwriting - a wayside sacrament. welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.

former future.

for much of my growing up years, and let's be honest, well into my college years, "beer" was, for all intents and purposes, a four-letter word.
it was synonymous with a darwin fish on your car or skipping church to go to brunch.

beer obviously led to drunkenness and debauchery and premarital sex (oh, and dancing).
it was to be avoided at all costs.
in one word: unacceptable.

but somewhere along the line, i realized that maybe beer (and alcohol in general) wasn't the enemy and that a little responsibility and moderation could go a long way.

but with all that said, i was still a little hesitant when mr. lesley and our good friend luke proposed the idea of starting a beer club with people from church.
a beer club connected to a church?
my teenage self wasn't sure how such a proposal would go over.

but fortunately for us, the church embraced the idea and the baker beer club was born.

people from the church, people from outside the church, people who like beer, people whose spouses like beer all come together once a month, check out a local brewery, and talk about the goodness we see in the beer.

how's that for redeeming culture?
yes, we believe there is goodness and truth in everything God made.
even (and especially) in beer.

our meetings thus far have been great and we continue to see new faces and drink good beer, but nothing quite compared to our meeting this past friday.

james and sarah howat, the owners of former future brewing company set to open in denver this fall, invited us over to their home for a preview tasting of four of their delicious beers.

did you hear that right?
they invited almost 20 strangers from a beer club they had never heard of previously into their HOME to give us free beer!
and it was absolutely wonderful.

sarah and james embodied hospitality that night.
their home is beautiful, there were delicious snacks to pair with the beer, and the conversation was easy and comfortable.

and then there was the beer.
i am very far from being a beer expert, but everything i tasted was delicious!
{and i made sure to ask all the true beer lovers in the group what they thought, and they agreed!}

we all tasted their saison, ipa, stout, and salted porter (my personal favorite), and with each taste it was clear how much time and thought and energy they put into their brewing.

i left that evening feeling like all was right in the world with a deeper understanding of the church and community and hospitality and great beer.

and
-come visit the baker beer club
for a bunch of church people, we're pretty cool.

...and then we got egged.

photo-68
summer nights.
there's nothing quite like them.

i mean really, there's nothing better than a volleyball game at the park finished off by ice cream at a local spot.
all feels right and good in the world on a night like that.

well, until you get egged.

you heard right.
last night, i was a victim of egging.
darn kids.

there we were.
just finishing up our ice cream and getting ready to head home.
when all of the sudden, before we knew what had happened, egg yoke covered our legs.
photo-69
normally, i would have run after that car with my fists in the air, but even though i run as fast as an african gazelle, the shock was paralyzing and they got away unscathed.

we cleaned ourselves up while jenny told us, "guys, this has happened to me before."
i guess eggers like to prey on people eating ice cream and those waiting in line for dave matthews tickets {in jenny's case.}

the good news?
i made scrambled eggs this morning, so the attackers didn't win.
no one can take away my love for eggs, and no one will taint my love for summer.

but friends, stay safe out there.
you never know when someone will throw eggs at your calves.

don't say i didn't warn you.
