I love the beginning of the semester for so many reasons, but the tradition of watching Big Trouble in Little China the night before classes start has to be one of my favorites. If you haven't been fortunate enough to see Kurt Russel in one of his finest roles, here's some quotes to wet your appetite:
Jack Burton: "Like I told my last wife, I says, 'Honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it's all in the reflexes.'"
Wang Chi: "Here's to the Army and Navy and the battles they have won; here's to America's colors, the colors that never run.
Jack Burton: "May the wings of liberty never lose a feather."
Jack Burton: "Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
I also like the beginning of the semester because it's hard for me to stay out of the classroom for too long. I'm fairly confident at this point in my life that I was born to teach, and I feel extremely lucky to get paid to do what I love(most days:). I met two classes of new students today, with 7 more classes between now and Friday. It's going to be one great semester. I just know it.
"Teaching is the greatest act of optimism." -Colleen Wilcox
One of the most influential movies in ELT Edge history, hands down. That and Hot Rod... which we need to watch soon in memory of The-One-You-Should-Have-Loved.
